No School Reminder
There will be no school on Monday, September 7th in recognition of Labor Day.  We hope you have a wonderful long weekend.

Community Unity Week/Spirit Week
Each fall the BSSD celebrates our community with a non-perishable food drive.  All donations are given to the Blue Springs Community Services League to support local families in need.  This food drive stocks the shelves for several months.  JNE will be collecting items September 8th-11th.  We will also be celebrating unity with a spirit week.

Fun Run
Earlier this week all students brought home Fun Run Information.  Below are links to all Fun Run information.

Volunteer Opportunity
You are invited to volunteer at the annual JNE Fun Run on Friday, September 25th.  All volunteers must sign up and complete the BSSD background screening process.  The background screening process must be completed at least 5 days before the event.  Only individuals that sign up in Parent Square, complete the background screening process, and are approved by Data Source will be permitted to volunteer at the event.  Background screenings must be completed each new school year.

Back Snack Program
What is it? A free program sponsored by Harvesters. The organization provides students with a bag of food each week that is meant to fill the gap for food needed over a weekend.

Who can join? Any John Nowlin student can request to join. We are allotted a certain number of bags. Initially we will try to limit one bag per family and will sign up students on a first come first serve basis.

How does it work? The food is delivered to the school every Friday, or the last day of a shortened week. The food is in a Walmart sized bag. It will be placed outside of the classroom and students pick up their bag as they leave for the day. Before extended breaks the organization will often send two bags which we try to send home on two separate days. Our first delivery will be Friday, October 2nd.

How do I sign up? Email our school social worker, Ms. Allen: nallen@bssd.net

A few things to remember…if you should participate, please remind your students to bring home their food and not leave it at school or on the bus. Also remind your students that you should look at the food prior to them eating it. The school district does not check for expiration dates and has no way of assuring safety in cases of food allergies.

JNE Vision Screening
Health Services will be conducting vision screenings at JNE on Wednesday, September 9th. These screenings will be for kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th graders, and any new students to the district. If your students screening is outside of normal limits, results will be mailed home. If your student wears glasses, please ensure they are wearing them that day. If your student is not in the grade listed but you have concerns and would like them screened, please let us know.

Difference Makers
Difference Makers is a Blue Springs School District mentoring initiative that connects K-5 students with caring adult volunteers. Difference Makers mentors are positive role models who give their time, energy, and talent to build positive relationships with students and to promote student literacy. If you are interested in being a Difference Maker at JNE, please contact Hollie Ryan at hryan@bssd.net or 816-874-3670.

Device Insurance Fee (3rd, 4th, & 5th grades only)
All students in grades 3-5 are assigned a device to use at home and school. Students have a device insurance fee assigned in PowerSchool. If you still need to pay this fee, review the directions on how to pay through RevTrak in Parent Portal. If you would prefer to pay with check, send it to school with your child to give to his/her teacher or pay directly with the secretaries in the front office. Checks should be made payable to JNE. Your child’s device will not be sent home until the insurance fee has been paid.

Lunch Guest & Volunteer Information

On September 28th, we will begin welcoming lunch guests to JNE. All guests must schedule a lunch appointment and complete a background screening prior to their visit. All visitors must complete the background screening annually.

1st Grade 12:05-12:25

As in past years, all lunch guests will schedule their visit. This year we are using Parent Square for lunch guest scheduling.  Available dates are for first semester (September-December).  Second semester dates will be shared at a later time.

Lunch Guest Information:
If you plan to purchase a lunch for yourself, from the cafeteria, there are only two payment options.

1) Use exact payment using cash. An adult lunch costs $4.60.
2) Pay with cash and have change go towards the student's lunch account.
Charging an adult lunch to the child's account is not an available option. The cafeteria doesn't have change and cannot take credit card payments. Thank you for your understanding.

To help maintain a safe and orderly school environment, we ask for your cooperation by adhering to the guidelines below:
  • Lunch guests will use Parent Square to schedule a date to eat lunch with a student.
  • Only 5 guests per grade level can be accommodated each day.
  • If a date is full, you will need to select an available open date. Some dates are not offered due to JNE activities.
  • Guests must sign up at least 2 days in advance.
  • Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes prior to the student lunch time.
  • If you are visiting more than one student, you must sign up for each individual student’s lunch time.
  • All lunch visitors must complete the online background screening application.  This process must be completed at least 5 days prior to your visit.
  • At check in, a photo ID will be requested, and guests will sign in using the visitor management system.  Once checked in, visitors must wear a visitor sticker while in the building.
  • A designated eating area will be provided for visitors and their student. Once the student’s lunch period is over, all visitors must leave the building. Guests must exit through the main office and check out using the visitor management system.
  • Guests are not permitted to leave the designated visitor area or walk students to class/recess.
